Joel Saunders

Growing up in small town Ontario, Joel started playing guitar at the age of five and became an active member of the local music community as a multi-instrumentalist and sound technician. He received two music scholarships and chose to study music and jazz guitar at the University of Guelph. Since then Joel has performed in many genres including jazz, free jazz, rock, choir, classical, pop, folk, and blues. Joel’s sound comes from his mix of funky acoustic singer-songwriter, jazzy blues electric guitar, and upbeat instrumental acoustic fingerstyle guitar. Joel competed in the 2016 Canadian Fingerstyle Guitar Competition against 25 competitors from across the globe and placed fourth.

In 2017 Joel released his debut album Where You Go (recorded at the Chalet Studios) which is a mix of singer-songwriter and fingerstyle guitar, and in 2019 released his first all fingerstyle guitar album, Harmonic Slice, recorded by legendary guitarist Antoine Dufour and funded by the Ontario Arts Council. Joel now resides in Guelph, although he teaches and performs around the GTA.
